She deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, as an officer, always leading from the front and embodying the values she taught. Though she faced the unimaginable battle of brain cancer, she met it with the same courage and resilience that defined her entire life. The Army and her son were her world, and she gave both her absolute best every single day. She was one of the strongest people anyone would ever meet—steadfast, inspiring, and unforgettable. Willis, a true American hero and trailblazer. Mr. Willis embodied service, courage, and community. As one of the first Black Marines to train at Montford Point in 1942, he broke barriers under unimaginable conditions and went on to serve bravely in World War II, the Korean War, and the early Vietnam era, rising to the rank of Sergeant Major. His commitment didn’t end with his military career. Mr. Willis dedicated his life to uplifting veterans, fighting for equality, and strengthening the Philadelphia community — becoming the first Black commander of American Legion Post 21 and earning the honor of having Paschall Avenue renamed Albert Willis Way. Patrick Osborne McDonald, Esq., 76, a lifelong Philadelphian, Vietnam War Marine Corps officer, and respected attorney, earned the Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry for his distinguished service in Vietnam before returning home to build a law firm specializing in medical malpractice defense. A scholar, athlete, and civic leader, Rick rowed competitively, captained his law school rugby team, served on numerous boards, and was a founding board member of the Arden Theatre Company. Remembered for his courage, intellect, warmth, and unwavering loyalty, he's left a lasting impression through his charisma and sharp intelligence.
