Willis, a true American hero and trailblazer. Mr. Willis embodied service, courage, and community. As one of the first Black Marines to train at Montford Point in 1942, he broke barriers under unimaginable conditions and went on to serve bravely in World War II, the Korean War, and the early Vietnam era, rising to the rank of Sergeant Major. His commitment didn’t end with his military career. Mr. Willis dedicated his life to uplifting veterans, fighting for equality, and strengthening the Philadelphia community — becoming the first Black commander of American Legion Post 21 and earning the honor of having Paschall Avenue renamed Albert Willis Way. A scholar, athlete, and civic leader, Rick rowed competitively, captained his law school rugby team, served on numerous boards, and was a founding board member of the Arden Theatre Company. Remembered for his courage, intellect, warmth, and unwavering loyalty, he's left a lasting impression through his charisma and sharp intelligence.
